just got back from a gala premier of "Visits: Hungry Ghost Anthology" at midvalley.. okay, right about now i'm sure all of u out there are going like "hungry what..?!" hehe, dont worry.. u're not THAT outdated - its a malaysian effort so i'm not too surprised if no one, *ahem* i mean, not many ppl's heard of it =). and after watching it, i'd hope for the sake of the producers and the cast that no one will ever hear of it .. hehe.
okay la, i'm just being mean. to give them credit, i think it was actually a pretty good effort. lemme elaborate abit on the film: its chinese horror film (hence the title, appropriately named after hungry ghost festival which begins this week apparently) which is divided into 4 "mini-films", each one directed by different ermm.. directors and filmed in a different styles.
ermm anyway the gist of it: the 1st one was pretty normal .. but experimented with lighting and classic shock factor found it virtually every horror movie. it was about a ghost who came back from the dead to avenge her death *yawn*
the 2nd one was one of those new age concept/themed shows. u know those with stoned-faced actors/actresses and have a 3 to 5 second pause in between each dialogue? if u think a story of a person talking to a bar of soap for 2 hours is art then u'd probably enjoy this one. haha. anyway, it was about a ghost who came back from the dead to visit her childhood friend.
the 3rd one was ghost story about a person making a ghost story.. hahaha. what happened was that this guy wanted to film up a spirit summoning seance (is that spelt right?) thing.. it went horribly wrong when the ppl involved didn't really take the whole thing seriously and asked the "spirit" to make the other person like her .. so thats exactly what the spirit did (note: the spirit's dead *duh*).
the last one was the most painful one. its was shown exclusively on footages captured by cctvs. what i mean is that since the story is set in a gal's apartment, it started off with the cctv footage of her leaving her apartment and then goes on to another cctv footage of her waiting for the elevator. then it moves on the the next cctv footage of her coming out of the elevator at the carpark and getting into her car. then fade out and continues to another footage later on that night when she gets back, parks her car, get into the carpark elevator .. go into her apartment bla bla bla, u get the picture.. but u must be wondering how u know what she's doing in her apartment since there aren't any cctvs in there right? wrong. the apartment guard seems to be a pervert so he actually installs some cameras in her apartment, so there's where the "in-house" footages came from. so anyway, the story is basically that of a ghost who comes back and avenges his death. *yawn*.
all in all i have to say that it was a relatively good attempt. there's still lotsa room for improvement, but considering this is the 1st time something like this has been attempted (at this scale) in malaysia, i think it was okay la. lets just hope it gets better from here else..
anyway, now comes the time to bitch about how "unglamourous" this gala premier is. u know u always equate movie premiers to be like those red carpet, billions of reporters snapping away feverishly at this kinda events right? hehe.. there was nothing of that sort tonite i tell you. okay, there was quite a no of celebrities and photographers there tonite, but mostly the producers, cast was being interviewed about the movie and stuff, thats all. (ahem, i oso got my pic taken when the producer came over and talked to us k? hehe..) but basically it wasn't as glam as u'd expect it to be. but hey, its malaysia.. what u expect right? (not that it mattered much, but just thought i'd paint the pic for u guys) anyway, nobody here gets all nervous and sweaty palmed when they see a malaysian celeb right? (or do they..?) hmmm...
